Gucci' History

When Guccio Gucci—son of a Florentine craftsman—opened a modest leather-goods shop in his native city in 1921, he laid the foundation for what would become one of the world's most powerful and recognizable luxury brands. Gucci was wise to the ways of the European aristocracy, having once worked at the Savoy Hotel in London, and his store's wares included traveling articles, luggage, and saddlery with a certain elegant je ne sais quoi. By the 1930's his accessories and bags, distinguished by the horse bit and stirrup motif, had become trendy among the well-heeled set. Over the next 30 years Gucci and his sons—Rodolfo, Aldo, Ugo, and Vasco—cemented the brand's international prestige with the introduction of its iconic bamboo-handled bag (still in production today), green-red-green webbing, and logo of interlocking G's. Further enhancing the company's image were Gucci-wearing style setters like Jackie O and Grace Kelly.

In the 1970's and 1980's the family business expanded into the Far East. As it diversified and added more accessible items to its line, however, its elite reputation began to tarnish. After Rodolfo's death in 1983, his son Maurizio took the reins of the company amid a storm of Gucci-versus-Gucci legal battles and a tax-evasion conviction for Aldo Gucci in 1986. The house was near bankruptcy when Maurizio sold half of the company's shares to a Bahrain-based investment group in the late eighties (the remaining shares were sold in 1993).

Enter Tom Ford. Dawn Mello, then Gucci's creative director, tapped him to design womenswear in 1990. By 1995, new CEO Domenico De Sole was planning a total relaunch; Ford's until-then behind-the-scenes role was expanded and he was named the new creative director. Ford masterminded a new Gucci image of exclusive, sex-fueled hedonism that twinned provocation with a concept of woman as glamazon. Over the next few years, he designed collections that would come to define the go-go days of the late nineties, with such signatures as the boot-cut velvet suit paired with a cleavage-baring unbuttoned shirt (incidentally his own trademark look), the white jersey cutout dress, and the flesh-colored goddess gown sprinkled with tiny crystals. With art direction by Carine Roitfeld and photographs by Mario Testino, an infamous marketing campaign teased the dangerous edges of pornography.

In 1999 the French powerhouse LVMH tried to acquire Gucci, but its rival PPR bested it, snapping up Gucci and creating the Gucci Group, which today is home to Yves Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen, and Balenciaga, among others. In 2004 Ford and De Sole left Gucci after sparring with PPR executives. Frida Giannini, a former accessories designer under Ford, is the current creative director.

Louis Vuitton Doubles Down on Shanghai's Strength

The ambitious roll-out was scheduled to preceed the May 1 start of the 2010 World Expo, where Vuitton is a sponsor of the French pavilion and hosts a special exhibition celebrating the magic of Paris. Louis Vuitton Chairman and CEO Yves Carcelle remarked that there's been a long commitment to the Chinese market, beginning with the "pioneering" move to open a first Vuitton store in mainland China in 1992, when "luxury didn't exist" in the country. Today, that foresight is paying off. He sees "the demand for luxury growing very fast." President of louis vuitton China Christopher Zanardi-Landi echoes the sentiment, believing that the country is home to discerning consumers that "absorb everything" and require brands to "work harder to excite them."

April 29, 2010 - In an unprecedented move during the brand's 156-year history, louis vuitton has opened two new boutiques in a single city on the same day. Shanghai is the lucky recipient of the French mega-brand's attentions.

Meanwhile, there's more in the works for the city. Shanghai's original Vuitton store at the Plaza 66 shopping center will be enlarged many times over and transformed into a new flagship location by late 2011. And it is already the first boutique worldwide to host a special atelier for commissioning made-to-order pieces and customizing other Vuitton goods.

Nothing short of spectacular, both locations-Pudong District and Huaihai Road--feature facades that glitter with LED lighting. The Peter Marino-designed spaces pick up on the brand's codes, such as monogram flowers, Damier checks and the iconic LV logo and subtly integrate them into the design from ceiling to floor. A full complement of fashion and accessories for men and women is available at each. Film star Gong Li was on hand at the ribbon cutting of the new Hauihai Road location.

Coco Chanel Three Weeks 1962 by Douglas Kirkman

Coco Chanel's words of wisdom have been repeated through the decades, many hold true today. Just before leaving one's home, Chanel advised one to remove the last thing one put on, as it is generally unnecessary. Coco Chanel Three Weeks 1962 is pared down to its very essence and yet offers up a sublime and deep look into the work and lives of two extraordinary artists.

September heralds the end of summer and the beginning of the school year. To the fashion crowd this September is a celebration of the enduring legacy of and fascination with Coco Chanel, the French couturier, and arbiter of style and grace. Sony Pictures Classics debuts Coco Avant Chanel (Coco Before Chanel) starring Audrey Tautou on September 25, 2009. Karen Karbo's The Gospel According to Coco Chanel is just out from Skirt Publishing. But true to the spirit of its subject, Coco Chanel Three Weeks 1962 by Douglas Kirkland from Glitterati Publishing, is a gorgeous coffee table book that has both style and substance.

Douglas Kirkland writes in his introduction, "This is about who she was, who I was and how she affected my life." At age 27, Kirkland, a photojournalist on assignment for Look Magazine, met Chanel Outlet Store, who was 79 at the time, and chronicled three weeks in her life in 1962.

Through a series of black and white photographs that are as luscious, mannered and utterly Chanel-esque, Kirkland opens the readers' eye to behind the runway scenes and rare personal moments.

Kirkland writes of this brief period in Paris from a personal perspective reflecting on his conversations with the revered Mademoiselle Chanel. There are many parallels between these two disparate souls. Both arose from humble origins, Kirkland from a tiny town in Canada and Chanel who was raised in an orphanage 200 miles from Paris.

Both artists pay attention to detail and eliminate the superfluous resulting in extraordinary beauty and simplicity. Chanel's goal was to design clothing that showed off a woman's figure while taking into account that women move, in and out of cars, up and down from chairs and so forth. It was imperative for Chanel that form and function be inherent in her designs.

Kirkland writes of his disciplined approach to his photography, "Is the exposure right and the focus? Am I at the best angle and in the right place?" As with Chanel's dedication to recognizing the desire and needs of her clientele, Kirkland believes in listening and being "sensitive" to his subject as he peers through his viewfinder looking for the "perfect" frame.  Designer and photographer both honor the heart of their work with a shared and determined goal - the love of their subject and desire to create absolute beauty.

Judith Thurman, literary critic for The New Yorker magazine and biographer of Colette and Isak Dinesen, has penned an elegant foreword, worthy of the designer and photographer. Her words capture the essence of Chanel and Kirkland and the intersection of their worlds. "...Their art is tender. It keeps faith with an ideal of beauty, which they refuse to fetishize."

In six short pages of text written 50 years after the meeting, Kirkland reflects back to 1962 and packs his paragraphs with an intense amount of biographical information about Coco Chanel. He writes of her interest in horse racing and gossip. He reminisces of lunch at her apartment at The Ritz and a visit to Versailles. And then the reader turns the page to begin the photo essay with Chanel, dressed in signature style, walking to her Paris atelier.
